Directed finding in favor of the Village of Matteson at Bench Trial

December 4, 2025

Genice Leavell v. Matteson, et al.; Case No. 24 L 13295

Sean and DeAndre recently won a bench trial in the Law Division before Judge Donnelly. This case stemmed from an incident between plaintiff, a former Cook County State’s Attorney Investigator, and a minor for whom, at the time, she was the court-appointed guardian. Plaintiff had a physical dispute with the minor at an LA Fitness if Matteson, and Matteson Police Officers were called to the scene as a result. You can read more details in the attached memo, but plaintiff ultimately sued the Village (and many other entities) and the case proceeded to trial on the false arrest and negligence claims against the Matteson Defendants.

Notably, this was Sean’s first bench trial and DeAndre’s first of many wins to come with our office. Both did an excellent job prepping witnesses and trial materials, and the resulting directed finding in favor of the Village Defendants clearly demonstrates their abilities with direct and cross examinations. Kathleen was also an integral part of the team, assisting with exhibits, tech, organization and of course all the work leading up to the trial. Jumana attended the trial to see the action, which is a great experience for someone who is headed to law school in the near future.
